Etymology
From an earlier Bulgarian чи́рей (čírej), from Proto-Slavic *čirьjь. Equivalent to чир (čir, “ulcer”) (dialectal) + -ей (-ej). Cognate with Serbo-Croatian чи̏р (“ulcer”), Slovene čȋr, čirȃj, Russian чи́рий (čírij), Ukrainian чи́р (čýr), чи́ряк (čýrjak), Polish сzуrеk.
Possibly a wanderwort found also in Greek σκίρρος (skírros, “callus”), Turkic (compare Turkish çirik (“pus”))
