From Proto-Mongolic *hutuxa, perhaps analyzable as утах (utax, to smoke, to fume) + -аа(н) (-aa(n)), but East Yugur shows no final nasal.

Cognate with Daur xutaa, East Yugur htaa, Kalmyk утан (utan).
