Inherited from Bulgar طخر (toxur, “nine”),[1] itself inherited from Proto-Turkic *tokuŕ (“nine”).[2][3]
Cognate with Khalaj toqquz, Turkish dokuz, Uzbek toʻqqiz, Bashkir туғыҙ (tuğıź) and Yakut тоҕус (toğus).
