From *toqay (“forest; brushwood”) - apparently a regional Central Asian term.
Cognate with Kazakh тоғай (toğai, “forest; bushes”), Kyrgyz токой (tokoy, “forest; bushes on flooded riverbanks”), Uyghur توقاي (toqay, “wildwood, forest”), Uzbek toqoj (“brushwood, bulrush”), Turkmen tokaý (“forest”), Azerbaijani toğay (“forest in river valleys”) etc.
