Borrowed from German Drempel, Trempel (knee wall), probably early 20th century (first recorded in 1930s) in Sloboda Ukraine region.[1]

Etymological Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language indicates a connection with Ukrainian dialectal кремпіле́ць (krempilécʹ), кремпо́лець (krempólecʹ), тримпа́йло (trympájlo).[2]
