Etymology
From Common Turkic *teŋiz (“lake, sea”), from Proto-Turkic *teŋiŕ. Cognate to Kyrgyz деңиз (deŋiz), Karaim tengiz, Karachay-Balkar тенгиз (teñiz), Kumyk денгиз (deñiz), Karakalpak teńiz, Kazakh теңіз (teñız), Nogai денъиз (deñiz), Bashkir дингеҙ (dingeź), Tatar диңгез (diñgez), etc. Also, Compare Mongolian teŋgis (“ocean”).
