From Proto-Mordvinic *ťäšťə, from Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *täštä (star). Compare Moksha тяште (ťašťe), Finnish tähti, Livonian tēd, Kildin Sami та̄ссьт (tāss’t), Eastern Mari тиште (tište).
