From Proto-Mordvinic *śalgə, inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *śëlkaw (pole, rod). Cognates include Finnish salko, Northern Sami čuolggu, Udmurt сюл (śul), Hungarian szál, Eastern Khanty [script needed] (saɣǝl).
