смърч
Bulgarian
Etymology
Inherited from Proto-Slavic *smьrčь (“spruce”), of uncertain origin.
Folk etymology relates it to Bulgarian смъ́рчам (smǎ́rčam, “to snore”), Bulgarian смърдя (smǎrdja, “to stink”) because of the characteristic aroma of its pitch, which spruce is known for.
