Etymology

Borrowed from Old Polish smalec, further borrowed from Middle High German smalz, from Old High German smalz, from Proto-West Germanic *smalt, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *smaltą. Cognate with German Schmalz, Yiddish שמאַלץ (shmalts). First attested in the 16th century.
