Diminutive form of Proto-Slavic *selzь + -ка (-ka). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *selzenь, *selzina, whence are dialectal Bulgarian сле́зен (slézen), Serbo-Croatian слезѝна, Slovene slezẹ̑na, Russian селезёнка (selezjónka), Ukrainian селезі́нка (selezínka), Czech slezina, Polish śledziona.
