Etymology 1
Already in the XIst century Old East Slavic ситникъ (sitnikŭ) and ситие (sitie), also сѣтникъ (sětnikŭ), from Proto-Slavic *sitъ. Depending on the etymology of that word, the bread-name is either the same word or rather си́то (síto, “sieve”) + -ник (-nik) because of being a bread made of sifted starch.

- сито́вина (sitóvina) — was used dialectally for Typha spp.
- сито́вник (sitóvnik) — is now used for Pycreus

- ситня́г (sitnjág) — is now used for Eleocharis; formerly ситня́к (sitnják) also for Scirpus
