Etymology

Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic съвѣдѣтель (sŭvědětelĭ). Originally contained the archaic root вѣд- (věd-, to know); after regular dissimilation ѣ-ѣ > и-ѣ reanalysed as containing the root вид- (vid-, to see), and equivalent to с- (s-) + ви́деть (vídetʹ) + -тель (-telʹ).
