From Proto-Mongolic *sana-, from Proto-Turkic *sāna- (“to count, determine”) < *sān (“number, count”) or directly from *sān- (“to be counted, regarded”) all of which are ultimately derived from *sā- (“to think, count, consider”). Compare Dongxiang sana, Buryat һанаха (hanaxa).
Also compare Turkish saymak (“to count, regard”), san (“reputation”), sanmak (“to suppose, reckon”), Kyrgyz саноо (sanoo, “to count”).
