Etymology 1

Probably cognate with dial. Slovene repáti (to pluck) (e.g. repati ščir (to pluck weed)) and, according to BER, further with Lithuanian rė̃pti (to reach, to grab, j-present). May stem back from Proto-Slavic *rěpati (in view of the Lithuanian cognate).
