From (Balkan) Proto-Slavic *raponъ, of substrate origin. Compare Ancient Greek ῥάφανος (rháphanos, “cabbage”), Latin Raphanus (“radish”). Equivalent to ра́па (rápa, “radish”) (dialectal) + -он (-on).
