Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *persъpa, originally a resultant noun of пря- (prja-) + си́пя (sípja, to pour, to strew). Cognate with Serbo-Croatian пре̏спа, Ukrainian пере́спа (peréspa) and further akin to Polish zaspa (snowdrift), wyspa (island), Ukrainian за́спа (záspa, dike), ви́спа (výspa, island), Russian по́спа (póspa, nozzle) (dialectal).
