From Proto-Slavic *perživati (a/j-conj.), an intensive derivative of пре- (pre-) + жва (žva), жву́я (žvúja, to gnaw, to chew) (obsolescent).

  1. (intransitive) to chew, to munch repeatedly
    Synonym: предъ́вквам (predǎ́vkvam)
  2. (transitive) (for ruminants) to regurgitate already swallowed food (called cud) for additional chewing
    Кра́вата прежи́вя зобта́ ня́колко пъ́ти.
    Krávata prežívja zobtá njákolko pǎ́ti.
    The cow regurgitates the cud several times.
