Inherited from Old Ruthenian потрѣбный, потребный (potrěbnyj, potrebnyj), from Old Church Slavonic потрѣбьнъ (potrěbĭnŭ) and Old East Slavic потрѣбный (potrěbnyj) (from Old Church Slavonic), possibly later reinforced by Old Polish potrzebny. By surface analysis, потре́ба (potréba) + -ний (-nyj).
