Etymology
From Proto-Slavic *ploska (“flat surface”), *plosky (“flat vessel”), akin to or borrowed from Proto-Germanic *flaskǭ (“flask”). Cognate with Serbo-Croatian пло̏ска (“flat jug”); Czech ploska (“sole”), Slovak ploska (“sole”); dialectal Russian пло́ска (plóska, “type of flask”), Ukrainian пло́ска (plóska, “flat bottle”). Loaned into Romanian ploscă (“flat jug”). Historically also attested as y-stem: Old Church Slavonic плосква (ploskva), Old East Slavic плосковъ (ploskovŭ).
