From Proto-Mordvinic *piźəmə, derived from Proto-Finno-Permic *piśä-~*piśa- (“to drip, dribble”), suffixed with *-mV. Related to Moksha пизем (piźem, “rain”), Finnish pisara (“drop”), Estonian pisar (“tear”).
