Inherited from Old East Slavic печень (pečenĭ), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *pečenь. By surface analysis, печёный (pečónyj) + -ь (-ʹ).
Cognate with Ukrainian печі́нка (pečínka), Polish pieczeń (“roast”), Czech pečenka (“roast”). Compare Lithuanian kẽpenys (“liver”), from kèpti (“bake”).
