Etymology
From Proto-Slavic *obpona, cognate with Polish opona (“tire, mater”) and Czech opona (“theater curtain”). Probably from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂n- (“cloth, fabric”), cognate with Latin pannus, Ancient Greek πῆνος (pênos, “web”), and Proto-Germanic *fanô.
