From Proto-Slavic *nyrьcь, *nyrikъ, *nyrъkъ (“diver”). Cognate with Russian ныре́ц (nyréc, “diver”), ныро́к (nyrók, “diving duck, pochard”), Ukrainian нуре́ць (nurécʹ), пронуро́к (pronurók, “dipper (bird)”), Polish nurzyk (“guillemot”).
