Etymology
From *neme / *nämä "what", from Proto-Turkic *nē- (“what”). -me is an interrogative formant. Doublet of нәмә (nəmə).
Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (nemä, “something”);[1] Kyrgyz неме (neme, “something”), Kyrgyz эмне (emne, “what?”), Turkmen näme (“what?”), Uzbek nima, Uyghur نېمە (nëme), نىمە (nime, “what?”), Khakas ниме (nime, “what?”), Shor небе (“thing”), etc.
