Etymology 1
Derived from Persian نرد (nard, “backgammon”), likely through Georgian ნარდი (nardi) and Armenian նարդի (nardi). The game is most popular in Persian-influenced areas in the Caucasus and Central Asia. During the Soviet era it gained popularity in the rest of the USSR.
