Etymology

From Proto-Mongolic *meŋgün, compare Buryat мүнгэн (müngen), Kalmyk мөңгн (möñgn), Dongxiang miengu.

Perhaps related to Western Yugur menek (money), Arghu بَنَكْ (benek, small copper coin) identified by Clauson with Common Turkic *benek (spot, speck, freckle) from Persian بنک (banak, seed, pimple) [1] (perhaps influenced by *beŋ (birthmark)). See Turkish benek.
