From Proto-Mongolic *menekei, compare Kalmyk меклә (meklä), Daur meleg. The -l- may come from a dissimilation of the two nasals.
Astronomical sense may be a semantic loan from Tibetan, see ཀརྐ་ཊ (krka ṭa).
