Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *mujə-, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *muja- (“to touch, feel (by hand)”). Cognate with Finnish muistaa (“to remember, recall”), Estonian mõistma (“to understand”), Eastern Mari муаш (muaš, “to find, understand, decide”).
