From мара́зм (marázm, senility, idiocy) + -ик (-ik, -ic, -ist), but on an extended stem маразмат- (marazmat-), as if derived from an Ancient Greek *μάρασμα, *μαρασματ- (*márasma, *marasmat-) – extant in Early Modern Greek μάρασμα (márasma) – whereas the true etymon is the Ancient Greek μαρασμός, μαρασμ- (marasmós, marasm-).
