Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *lomań, wherein * may be a noun-forming suffix. The further origin is uncertain. Sometimes compared with Proto-Samic *olmōńčë, whence Kildin Sami олмэнч (olmenč), олма (olma, person, human).
