Inherited from Proto-Slavic *lixodějь. By surface analysis, ли́хо (lýxo, evil) + ді́яти (díjaty, to do). Cognates include Russian лиходе́й (lixodéj), Belarusian ліхадзе́й (lixadzjéj).
