кыргыз

Kyrgyz

Etymology

Of uncertain etymology. Possibly from кырк кыз (kırk kız, forty girls), a reference to the Epic of Manas unifying forty small tribes against the Chinese and the Muslim expansion; or possibly from кырк ууз (kırk uuz, forty tribes); or possibly from кыргыс (kırgıs, imperishable, inextinguishable, undying). There are several other theories; more at Kyrgyz.

Compare also Khakas хырғыс (xırğıs, a tribe name), Tuvan кыргыс (kırgıs, a tribe name), etc.
