Inherited from Proto-Slavic *kučeravъ. By surface analysis, ку́чер (kúčer, curl) + -я́вий (-jávyj). Compare Russian кучеря́вый (kučerjávyj), Belarusian кучара́вы (kučarávy), Polish kędzierzawy.
