From Proto-Turkic *kūrïk (“dry”). Cognate with Tatar коры (qorı), Karachay-Balkar къуру (quru), Uzbek quruq, Uyghur قۇرۇق (quruq), Khakas хуруғ (xuruğ), Turkish kuru (“dry”), Chuvash хӑрӑк (hărăk, “dry (of wood)”).
