Inherited from Old East Slavic коузньць (kuznĭcĭ), from коузнь (kuznĭ) + -ьць (-ĭcĭ), from Proto-Slavic *kuznьcь. Distantly related to кова́ть (kovátʹ), кова́ль (koválʹ) and the equivalent forms in other Slavic languages, such as Ukrainian кова́ль (koválʹ), Polish kowal, Czech kovář, Slovak kováč, Serbo-Croatian kòvāč, Cyrillic ко̀ва̄ч.
