Inherited from Old East Slavic колодязь (kolodjazĭ), from Proto-Slavic *koldędzь. Early borrowing from Proto-Germanic *kaldingaz, from Proto-Germanic *kaldiǭ, whence Old Norse kelda (source), Danish kilde (source), Finnish kaltio (source).

Doublet of кла́дезь (kládezʹ), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic.
