Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *inši(mi), possibly borrowed from Proto-Baltic *inžinmī (whence Lithuanian įžymì (“(well)known”). Cognate with Moksha инжи (inži, “guest”). More distant cognates include Finnish ihminen (“human, man”), Estonian inimene (“human being, person”) (both are from Proto-Finnic *inhiminen). Koivulehto suggests an earlier Proto-Indo-European etymology for Finnic and Mordvinic (Proto-Indo-European *ǵn̥h).
