From Old East Slavic жестъкъ (žestŭkŭ), from Proto-Slavic *žestъ. Perhaps influenced by шорсткі (šórstki). Cognate with Ukrainian жорстки́й (žorstkýj), жорсто́кий (žorstókyj), Russian жёсткий (žóstkij), жесто́кий (žestókij).
