From Proto-Turkic *tumšuk. Cognate with Turkish tumşuk (“large beak”), Kazakh тұмсық (tūmsyq, “beak”), Kyrgyz тумшук (tumşuk, “beak”), Uzbek tumshuq (“beak”), Uyghur تۇمشۇق (tumshuq, “beak”) and Yakut тумус (tumus, “beak”).
