Originally diminutive of дан (dan, “toll”) (poetic) + -ък (-ǎk), from Proto-Slavic *danь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *dṓˀnis, from Proto-Indo-European *deh₃-. Cognate with Macedonian данок (danok), Serbo-Croatian да̏нак.
