From Proto-Slavic *gulьja, cognate with Russian гулья (gulʹja, “swelling”) (dialectal), Ukrainian гуля (hulja, “swelling”) (dialectal), Slovak huľa (“ball”). Formed from the same root as Bulgarian жу́ля (žúlja, “to rub”), with the collective marker -ия (-ija).
