Borrowed from Ukrainian гноби́ти (hnobýty), from Proto-Slavic *gnobiti. According to Pokorny, possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gnet-; compare Proto-Slavic *gnesti (to press), Proto-Germanic *knudaną.
