Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *větvь (branch); cognate with Old East Slavic вѣтвь (větvĭ), Russian ветвь (vetvʹ), Czech větev and Slovak vetva. Outside of Slavic, cognate with Old Prussian witwan, Ancient Greek ἴτῠς (ítus, felloe) and Latin vitus (felloe), all from Proto-Indo-European *uh₁i-tu-s.
