New meaning acquired by Proto-Slavic *věnьcь (“wreath, garland”), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *waiˀníkas, details of further origin unclear (possibly from Proto-Indo-European *woh₁y-nos or derived later) but ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (“to twist, wind, weave”).
