Inherited from Old East Slavic *вѣ́веръка (*vě́verŭka), from Proto-Slavic *vě̀verъka, from *vě̀verь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *wēweris, from Proto-Indo-European *we-wer-is, from *wer-.[1][2][3][4][5] Cognate with Russian вевёрка (vevjórka), Old Polish wiewiórka.
Ukrainian dialectal вев'ю́рка (vevʺjúrka), вив'ю́рка (vyvʺjúrka), вію́рка (vijúrka), гав'ю́рка (havʺjúrka) borrowed from Polish wiewiórka.
