Derived from Proto-Slavic *vъrčь (yo-stem) + -ва (-va) (or perhaps inherited from Proto-Slavic *vъrči (jū-stem)). Probably a wanderwort, cognate with to Latin urceus, Ancient Greek ὕρχη (húrkhē), Gothic 𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌺𐌾𐌿𐍃 (aurkjus).
