Etymology

From вой (voj, army) (dated) + -е- (-e-) + нача́лник (načálnik, conductor, leader), a calque of Ancient Greek στρατηγός (stratēgós) (or formed in the same logic as it). Compare the Germanic borrowing херцо́г (hercóg, duke) from Proto-Germanic *harjatugô (army commander).
