виноватый

Russian

Etymology

Ostensibly from вина́ (viná) + -ова́тый (-ovátyj), but since the suffix is normally attached to adjectives and not nouns, may instead represent a dissimilation of вино́вный (vinóvnyj) + -ова́тый (-ovátyj). Replaced ви́нный (vínnyj) in the 19th century due to homonymy.
