Inherited from Old East Slavic въздыхати (vŭzdyxati).[1] By surface analysis, вз- (vz-) + ды́хать (dýxatʹ) + -а́ть (-átʹ). Compare Belarusian уздыха́ць (uzdyxácʹ).
